Canon Digital Ixus 860is Camera with Ubuntu Linux

860is works out of the box with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, but not earlier versions. 860is does not support USB mass storage.

You plug in the camera, nothing happens. Looking at syslog shows:

$ tail -f /var/log/syslog
usb 7-4: device not accepting address 97, error -71

Most likely cabling is bad. I had this problem, changed USB cable, and plugged in the camera again. F-Spot import dialog opened automatically – problem solved.
