- Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 LTS
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 LTS
Hardy is released! Official download page will be quite busy, but you can get Hardy torrents from my page.
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 will be published was published on April 2008 (2008–04-30). It will be Long Term Support version. It will probably be supported three years on the desktop (until 2011) and five years on the server (until 2013).
This article has lot of notes based on beta testing. There are many bugs, as there are supposed to be in a beta. This does not mean that production version would have these problems.

Testing Hardy Heron and writing this document is supported by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences
Download Beta – also has list of new features.
Hardy Beta on dc7700 – Testing Notes
Works fine with lab computers (dc7700), all hardware seems to be automatically configured with built-in drivers. Main problems are currently (beta, 2008-04-16: Apache SSL cert, installer time zone selection; minor problems: asking submissions to closed hwdb, beeps all the time, miro broken, firefox add ons broken.
Hardware: HP-Compaq dc7700, 64bit, about 4 GB RAM, 19” flat panel display. This machine works well with Gutsy. In Gutsy all hardware is autodetected and configured automatically.
Software: Hardy Beta amd64 Desktop, downloaded from Ubuntu.com on 2008-04-14 w16 Mon.
I wrote the report while doing the things reported with a computer. Links to bug reports in Launchpad were added afterwards.
Boot to Live CD
Boot menu popped up language selection. Autocontinue timer still probably selects live CD in 30 s. Chose English, “Try Ubuntu without making any changes on your computer”.
Desktop looks very familiar and similary to Gutsy. Backround is now artists’ view of a heron.
Display was detected and configured automatically. Screen was in correct place, icons, lines and fonts looked sharp. Verified by using monitors’ built in settings menu: Menu: Advanced Menu: Information: “Current settings: 1280×1024-60Hz; Recommended settings: 1280×1024-60Hz”.
Mouse was autoconfigured. All features worked: move, left, right, middle, scroll.
Starting Firefox by clicking on panel showed that desktop effects are enabled by default. They look cool, but I can already see trouble ahead – hope they are finally stable.
Network was automatically configured, tested by googling “Tero Karvinen” and surfing my pages. Finnish keyboard was not automatically detected. However, non-scandic letters seemed to work fine. I could have selected keyboard on CD boot menu, and I can choose it on install.
Firefox is now better integrated to Ubuntu theme. It is Firefox 3.0b4 (Help: About Mozilla Firefox), even though typing url “about:” incorrectly shows version “1.9b4”. (Bug?). Home icon is now in a weird place. New url guessing system allows you to type the middle of the url instead of the beginning.
Test machine lacks first hard drive, so on the boot BIOS required me to press F1. This is a hardware issue and should not be present outside Haaga-Helia labs.
Boot blinked “press esc for GRUB menu” (or something like that), then proceeded to boot. Booting seemed very fast! I wonder if it just did the Windows thing and showed the login screen while continuing boot on the background. Anyway, this is an improvement.
I was logged into desktop. Display seemed good (clear, high res, sharp, right image size). I tried browsing to www.iki.fi/karvinen. Thus, I saw that mouse, network and keyboard worked. I tested typing scandics (äö) to URL bar and noticed that scandics worked too. Thus, desktop was correctly installed.
On the first boot, there were two notifications. Topmost was “Information available” and it obscured the notification belowed. I did not have time to write the down before they disappeared, because I was busy writing other notes.
Install
– Language (during install): English
Time zone selection is unusable. Map just jumps around, it’s very hard to hit Helsinki. In addition to the map insanely jumping around, it forces user to pixel perfectly pin point Helsinki in the moving map. (Time Zone selection map jumps BUG)
– Time zone: Helsinki (EEST GMT+3:00)
– Keyboard: Finland – Finland
Partitioning (”Prepare disk space”)
Partitioning Wizard now shows which operating system is taking space. Streching is done by dragging the line between partitions.
– Guided – use entire disk (sda)
Bug/Enhancement: Installer makes me wait between questions. This computer has 4 GB of RAM, and most computers have enough. Couldn’t it simply read the questions to memory before the installer starts?
– Who are you? “Tero Karvinen”, tkarvine, piilo5_ana!, tuuna. (And no, that’s not really my password)
Ready to install. Checked that I answerred questions correctly as this is the last moment to cancel. Noticed that Advanced tab now has an option to set network proxy.
– Install
Non-interacitve part of installation started.
During the installation, I noticed that migration assistant did not pop up when I chose to erase entire disk. I’m happy to see that at least that problem with migration assistant is now fixed. Time zone selection has a serious bug in it.
When Ubuntu was installing, suddenly “target” directory popped open in nautilus. Maybe it was automounted after being created. This can easily confuse users. (BUG: /target opens in nautilus during install)
Installation finished 10 minutes after starting. In the end of installation, /target window was raised on top. “Installation complete” dialog was obscured by “target” window.
Continue using live cd or restart? “Restart now“. CD was ejected, but screen was filled with green, repeated garbage with thin lines trough it. This garbage obscured the “press enter to continue”. This will probably make beginners hard boot the computer with power button. I pressed enter and reboot continued. I did not have to use power button. CD tray was not automatically closed. (BUG: Junk on Screen After CD Eject – Encourages Hard Boot ) This has worked (with the same dc7700) on some older Ubuntus, probably Gutsy.
Features to be tested in Install
User login name: installer should check that login name is sane. Best to limit to POSIX user name /[a-z]{1}[a-z0-9]{0,7}/. But I could not imagine a situation where it would be smart to have user name (login name) of “Einari Vähäkäähkä-Rüetschi”. (Unverified BUG: Login name not checked for sanity in installer) This used to be a problem, check if it is in Hardy Beta.
Hardy Desktop features
Desktop seems faster and more responsive now than in Gutsy. Could it be related to desktop effects, or is there some new woodoo in the kernel?
2008-04-14: “System tools: Hardware testing” is again asking us to send information to Ubuntu Hardware database. This database is closed, it’s unclear who owns the data (maybe Canonical would like to have it), and Canonical representatives ignore questions about hwdb status. I filed a bug in 2006 (yes, two years ago), contacted Canonical personnel by email and face-to-face. No decent answers to my questions were given. Still marked “in progress”. (BUG: Closed hardware database)
Updated everything with update manager: update, partial upgrade, start upgrade. Weirdly, update manager told me to close all open applications. Hopefully, this does not happen every time I update. Update manager said that with an example connection, downloading takes about 50 min. This was quite misleading, as it only took about 2 min with Haaga-Helia’s connection. Installation of packges took less than 15 min (according to update managers ETA). Maybe this was a dist-upgrade, and the warnings were shown because of that.
Firefox
Home button appeared in the old location. Maybe it’s done differently during live-cd and installed system.
Wheel works in reverse. When I scroll towards me, text becomes smaller. I hope brain damage is not permanent.
Bug: Keyword search broken, tested with launchpad ubuntu bugs search.
Firefox Add-Ons
Firefox add-ons: Get add-ons (former Get Ubuntu Addons) recommends “Clipmarks”. “Learn more” link does not seem to work. Does this addon submit user data to a closed, commercial service? At least the description does not warn that it would. (BUG Learn more -link does not work in Get (Ubuntu) Addons to Firefox) (Unverified BUG? No warning about addons submiting user data to internet / unverified)
Clicking “Install” to addon shows “Installing…” text in place of button, and a window so small that it only shows window borders. An update was running at the same time. After window is resized larger, I can see that it’s title is “Firefox” and the window itself is empty. No wa (BUG: Addon install does not finnish, displays unusably small window)
Firefox add-on system seem broken.
Get Ubuntu Addons has these usefull addons:
-
WebDeveloper
-
AdBlock (but not AdBlock plus)
(BUG: Install/Remove Extensions has “Cancel” button instead of close ) but it of course does not cancel installing the programs after I have chosen “install more progs”.
Internationalization and Localization
Installing language (System: Administration: Language support) requires reboot. Is this really necessary? Couldn’t the core components of language support be installed by default, and only install the plain text po files later. (Unverified BUG: Adding language requires reboot)
Location Ignored
Location is asked in installer. (Yes, the jumpy one in Hardy Beta). But this is mostly ignored. In Hardy, at least weather applet ignores this. Panel: Add to Panel: Weather Report. I have probably reported this earlier. (BUG: Location Ignored. Location ignored in Weather Applet)
Elephant Skin Background Included
Desktop / Right Click: Change Desktop Background. Elephant skin is finally included.
Package Manager
Package Manager (APT) is also commented above, eg. in Firefox add ons and update manager.
Popular packages (according to Applications: Add/Remove: Popularity) that are not installed by default: – Thunderbird – (KNetAttach) – (Amarok) – (OpenOffice.org Database) – Finally Ubuntu got rid of that! Use eg. MySql instead. – (KDE Bluetooth stack) – Katapult – KPDF …
Many of those are not that interesting. Either they are for KDE and eqvivalent Gnome counterparts were chosen, or they are not very good (OpenOffice Database). There should now be a Gnome Katapult-like app too.
Some usefull applications that are missing:
-
Inkscape
-
gFTP (because Gnome GUI scp does not work BUG)
-
Qalculate
-
Open ClipArt
-
Miro
Some people also want to enable “All available applications” and install “Ubuntu restricted extras”. This adds support for Java (someday to be Free…), Flash and mp3.
Miro
Applications: Add/Remove; Show: All Open Source Applications; Search: miro; (install)
miro 1.1.2-0ubuntu2
BUG: Miro is not shown in Applications menu. Used to work in Gutsy.
BUG: Channel tree unresponsive Used to work in Gutsy.
Someone proposed updating miro to upstream version despite the freeze.
Don’t Beep at Me!
BUG: Beeps all the time. Still a problem. For example, beeps PC speaker once every time user presses tab in CLI. And that’s often.
Could also be fixed in Bash or readline (based on comment on the bug):
# /etc/inputrc # do not bell on tab-completion set bell-style none
BUG: PC speaker is not muted with Volume control or should I say “No Obvious Way to Mute PC Speaker”
Desktop Effects
Default settings for desktop effects seem to work fine.
Enabling Extra desktop effects causes problems. System: Preferences: Appearance: Visual Effects: Normal → Extra. After a while of use, Firefox window started to flap by itself. Moving the window around fixed this, but it’s annoying anyway. (Not yet reproducible BUG: Window corner keeps flapping with Extra visual effects)
Automatic Bug Reports with Apport
When a program crashes, user has an option to submit bug report. After verifying user willingness to send data a couple of times, letting user to check the technical report and making him wait about one min, apport opens launchpad login page in Firefox. If logging in to launchpad and an account are required, Apport should tell about this beforehand. (BUG)
OpenOffice Finnish Spell Checking
(BUG: Finnish Spell Checking is not Installed with Finnish language support). When Finnish language support is installed, OpenOffice should automatically spell check all text marked as Tools:Language:For all text: Finnish.
To install
$ sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-voikko $ oowriter
Tools:Options:Languages settings:Writing Aids:Available language modules Finnish spellchecker (Voikko): enabled
Tools:Language:For all text:Finnish
Now it should spell check correctly. You might also need to set default language for documents.
Printing
-
System: Administration: Printing
-
New printer
Because lab network printer (HP Laserjet 2200, ethernet, dhcp) was autodetected, I just kept pressing Forward with default settings until printer was installed.
Printer testing
Chose “printer” in Admin:printers, Print test page. It did not print into this room.
So I also added another autodetected network printer, HP LJ 4400 as printer2. I printed test page with that too. Pages did not seem to print in the room I was, have to try later with a printer I have tested before.
(BUG: Default print size is letter) Yes, in “Printer options” tab. This is an old problem. US Letter is an obsolete page size only used in four countries in the world.
Gnome-Do
Gnome-do application launcher is available for installing. It’s similar to Katapult and Quicksilver. Seemed to work ok. Setting the keybinding is not intuitive. Program looks quite cool…
Looking at Gnome-Do homepage, it seems that GnomeDo and its plugins are coded in C# or Mono. Let’s see how long the love between Microsoft and “free” mono developers lasts.
Desktop Freeze
Desktop froze after clicking panel clock. Fixed with alt-ctrl-backspace. Alt-F2 gnome-panel. Then I got my panel back.
Panel Clock
New weather + world clock is nice.
(BUG: wrong week numbers ) Still. (BUG: uses obsolete units )
Nautilus
Apache on Hardy
Web server
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install apache2
$ firefox http://localhost
Localhost shows the default “It works” page.
$ ip addr|grep eth $ firefox http://172.28.1.173/
Page opens.
$ host 172.28.1.173 # not found, broken name server in our lab
Thus, web server is successfully installed.
User homepages
$ sudo a2enmod userdir Module userdir installed; run /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload to enable.
$ firefox http://localhost/~tkarvine/
Does not work yet, 404 not found.
$ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload
$ mkdir public_html $ echo "tero">sample.html
$ firefox http://localhost/~tkarvine/
Shows dir listing, clicking sample.html shows contents. Thus, user homepages work.
Encrypted TLS / https Connections Difficult
Just to speed up testing:
$ sudo apt-get install curl $ curl http://localhost <html><body><h1>It works!</h1></body></html>
Encrypted TLS connection does not work yet:
$ curl https://localhost curl: (7) couldn't connect to host
Let’s see if we already have it:
$ ls /etc/apache2/mods-available/|grep ssl ssl.conf ssl.load
Enable:
$ sudo a2enmod ssl $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload
(BUG: tab does not complete modules with a2enmod)
$ curl https://localhost curl: (35) error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol
Seems to work, let’s try with a browser
$ firefox https://localhost
Nope, it’s broken.
Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem.
(No obvious way to enable SSL/TLS in Apache2. BUG: apache2-ssl-certificate has gone missing since feisty and Out of the box SSL config should be made available for Apache with default-ssl config file attached) I hope this does not mean creating a certificate by hand, one command at a time. This was already broken in Gutsy.
OpenSSH on Hardy
$ sudo apt-get install openssh-server $ ssh localhost continue connecting (yes/no)? yes tkarvine@localhost's password: tkarvine@tuuna:~$ logout Connection to localhost closed.
Ok, that was easy.
Ubuntu Automatically Contacts Servers over the Internet
Ubuntu automatically contacts some servers over the internet. Nothing is done to hide this behavior, but informed consent is not asked for either.
Firefox “Latest Headlines” is an RSS or Atom feed from http://en-us.fxfeeds.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/headlines.xml . At least this will allow Ubuntus to be counted and IP addresses collected. In addition, normal browser agent string might be sent, which could include Ubuntu version, Firefox version and CPU architecture.
Firefox start page is set to http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04/ . Ubuntu’s verbose user-agent string sends a lot of data about local computer. “Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008041515 Firefox/3.0b5”
Does Ubuntu synchronize its time from ntp.ubuntu.com by default?
